The Olive Ridley Lays an Egg

Near Peninsula Papagayo, Ostional Wildlife Refuge plays host to the endangered Ridley sea turtle egg harvesting. Between June and December, one of Nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles takes place within easy reach of Peninsula Papagayo. The arrival by sea (Arribada, in Spanish), of the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtle to Ostional Wildlife Refuge is a sight not to be missed. On the darkest nights of the month, under the new moon, the beach itself can appear to be moving as thousands of heavily pregnant turtles clamber out of the lapping waters and laboriously make their way up the strand. They are intent on their mission. Often, they have come far, specifically to this, their natal beach, to continue the generational chain of survival. In 1987, Costa Rica initiated the Egg Harvest Project, a government-sponsored program that has increased the successful hatching of turtles in Ostional Wildlife Refuge by some 20% over the last decade. The park is monitored by guards, and specially-trained guides watch over turtles and tourists throughout the process. This season, Papagayo Luxury Founder and Owner, Jane Moore, together with Papagayo Luxury Director of Concierge Services, Bari Lehrman, and their families visited Ostional to experience the arribada. Both adults

Is 4 Years Old Too Young to Zipline?

One of the most desired adventures in Costa Rica has to be the zipline.  My husband and I have ziplined quite a few times, but always before we had kids.  Our favorite zipline included a 1 hour horseback ride up a mountain and then a zipline over multiple river crossings and waterfalls.  And in green season, we experienced the dubious thrill of wet ziplining (okay, it was really fun, but really, really wet).  If it was adventurous, we were always game for it.  All in all, it is an adrenaline rush and a great way to see a bit of the jungle, the birds, waterfalls, and wildlife. You get off a road and away from a resort and are exploring in the jungle in a “safe” way. At what age can you zipline? With our children, we try to include a lot of adventures and different experiences (though on a lesser scale), and we finally deemed that it was time for our wee ones to experience the thrill of THE ZIPLINE. Our litmus test was that our kids needed to be more excited than worried about the prospect of flying through the air on a cable. The time had come, but
