Guanacaste is well-known for its laid-back ‘Pura Vida’ culture, luxurious eco-tourism and picturesque panoramas, so it’s only natural that it’s fast becoming a world-class surf destination. Surrounded by protected nature reserves and hidden reefs, it’s the ideal location to learn how to surf or perfect your technique. We’ve rounded up our top tips to help you make the most of your time on the water here.
When is the best time to go surfing in Guanacaste?
Surfers can enjoy riding the waves all year round here, but the best time to come is between April and July. It’s worth noting that September and October are part of our rainy season, so although the waves are still there, the frequent downpours may limit the time that you can spend in the water.
Where can you find the best waves?
Papagayo is closest to the renowned waves of Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point, allowing for exclusive access to these famous surf spots. Enjoy exploring long stretches of sandy golden beaches with a breathtaking backdrop of wind-whipped mountains at Witch’s Rock, topped off with clean groundswells. Ollie’s point is particularly popular as it breaks best on low tide – so if you’re looking to avoid the crowds (and are confident enough to do so), it’s best to go at high tide. If you’re passionate about surfing and willing to travel further, our concierge will happily organize a road surfari for you, allowing you to discover the best breaks across the coastline.
What sort of wildlife can you see in the area?
The ocean is teaming with sea creatures – it’s not uncommon to spot the likes of tropical fish, manta rays and even the occasional sea turtle while you’re catching some waves. Local spots such as Monkey Head are particularly great for seeing Moray eels, large schools of colorful fish and spotted eagle rays. Not to mention the howler monkeys that hang from the lush vegetation on the shoreline.
Is the Costa Rican coast suitable for beginner surfers?
Guanacaste is the ideal destination for those who are just starting out on their surfing journey. The water temperature averages around 80 degrees throughout the year, and there’s an abundance of relaxed waves. Iguanita beach is just a 30 minute ride away, with soft, sandy shores that create the ideal environment for building up your confidence on the water.
Can you take lessons nearby?
Yes! The local Peninsula Papagayo resort offers surfing and coaching lessons for all abilities. Beginners can enjoy initial lessons at the private Prieta Beach Club, just minutes from their vacation rental, hosted by a team of exceptional surf guides. If you’re a little more experienced and happy to go it alone, you can also take one of the regular boat rides out to Witch’s Rock and Ollies Point. It’s a great way to hone your skills while truly connecting with nature.
Do I have to bring my own board?
If you prefer to travel lighter, you can choose to hire a surfboard made from eco-friendly materials during your stay, including: shortboards, fish, hybrid or longboards. However, you’re welcome to bring your own boards if you prefer to use your own while staying with us.
