According to the UN FAO Forest Resources Assessment, Costa Rica is covered with an incredible 2,605,000 hectares of rainforest. That amounts to 51% of the landmass in the area, with 24% classed as primary rainforest.
Peninsula Papagayo is no exception. Although the area is graced with the most beautiful sandy beaches and calm waters, each coastline is also embellished with glimpses of its very own rainforest. It creates a striking contrast all year round, with new elements to explore and enjoy with every new passing season. We’ve rounded up some of our most frequently asked questions about Guanacaste’s rainforest landscape so you can be sure to see the best that the region has to offer during your stay here.
What is classed as a rainforest?
Quite simply, a rainforest is a tropical forest. These areas are usually densely populated with tall trees that soak up year-round rainfall, even in large quantities. Such trees usually grow to an average of 100 inches tall (or 254 centimeters). Their large leaves and sprawling foliage means that they block out much of the sunlight from streaming down the ground, so you won’t see the same heavy undergrowth as you’d usually find in a jungle. However, there’s a plethora of vibrant flora here. In fact, Costa Rica offers over 10,000 different species of vascular plants, with new varieties springing up in the area every year. There’s even a Guanacaste tree – the namesake of our province and a national symbol for the country as a whole.
How far is Peninsula Papagayo from the rainforest?
Guanacaste’s breathtaking coastline is embellished with tropical dry forest. This means that the aesthetics of the place really change depending on the seasonal and climatic changes. Visit Peninsula Papagayo during the rainy season and you’ll notice it’s incredibly lush and green, just like you’d typically see on a postcard of the area. If you’re looking to visit us in the dry season, the colors are much more muted.
For those feeling a little bit more adventurous during their stay here in Guanacaste, we would definitely recommend a day trip to the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano area. Just an hour and a half’s drive from your luxury vacation rental villa, the journey itself is a feast for the eyes. As soon as you head up into the mountains, you’ll notice that the environment changes through the transitional forest. The trees get bigger, vegetation is slightly more spread out and the scenery is nothing short of spectacular. Think gushing waterfalls, sky blue streams and branches teaming with exotic wildlife.

What can you do in Guanacaste’s rainforests?
There are so many options, it really depends on the vacation you have in mind. If you want to truly explore the area for yourself, we can organize a private guided adventure, leading you through trekking paths and biking trails. There are hanging bridges that allow you to venture further up into the canopy to gain a truly different perspective of the landscape here. Those who like to get a kick of adrenaline will love the zip wires, rafting adventures and water slides that allow you to quickly journey through the mangroves and feel the warm breeze rush through your hair. Or if you’d prefer to take a moment to soak in all the sights and sounds at your own pace, you can head to the natural mud baths and warm thermal springs. It’s a great way to destress and relax after a day in the area, while still being fully immersed in nature.
