Guanacaste is famous the world over for its spectacular coastline and breathtaking views. Many of our guests will look to go surfing or swimming in the ocean here during their stay with us. If you’re looking to join them, you’re probably wondering what the water temperature is going to be like. We asked our concierge, Gerardo, some of the most frequently asked questions about Peninsula Papagayo’s oceans so you have all the information you need before you plan your next trip to the beach.
What’s the average ocean temperature in Guanacaste?
Costa Rica is situated close to the equator, you can expect to enjoy warm ocean waters in Guanacaste during your stay. May through November has warmer water temperatures, while December through April have cooler water temperatures. Water temperatures tend to peak between 28 to 30°C (82 to 86°F), and dip to lows of 25 to 28°C (77 to 82°F) in January. However, it’s worth noting that temperatures can differ slightly along the shoreline after heavy rain or long periods of strong offshore winds. This is because this natural movement among the waves can cause the cooler deep water to surface above the water that has been gently warmed by the sunshine.
What should I wear to go surfing?
The warm temperatures mean that you can get away with wearing a rash vest and board shorts when surfing throughout the year. Having said this, it’s always worth checking the real-time air temperature, wind-chill and sunshine levels before you head out to the beach on the day. Is the water clear in Costa Rica?
You’ll find that the water is generally clear here – although it’s more turquoise than the crystal-clear waters that you might expect to find on the Caribbean side of the country. The ocean here is teeming with marine wildlife, and the local government is keen to continue to protect and preserve their beautiful habitat. In fact, many of the beaches have achieved Blue Flag status, so you can expect to see clean ocean and drinking water, trash-free sands and waste disposal facilities. Not only does this make Guanacaste a more sustainable destination for swimming and surfing, it also means that you can truly enjoy the best that nature has to offer.
