From about mid-May through late Nov/early Dec, when there is no wind, the ocean is usually calm and warm and it’s much easier to enjoy the sea life. Sea turtles usually mate Jun through Sep/Oct, and the humpback whales are calving and start to arrive around Aug for several months. Best fishing of the year is Jun-Sep.
Case in point, a recent 100 pound roosterfish catch (and release) this month. Separately, a guest caught 7 (seven!) sailfish in one outing last week. Our family was out on the sea a few weeks ago and saw a mother humpback whale with her baby, olive ridley turtles mating, and “flying” devil rays. So, it may be green season and have an afternoon shower, but expect to see lots of sea life, and plan your excursions for the morning!
We highly recommend a boat trip during your stay no matter when you visit. It is an amazing way to see the rugged beauty of Peninsula Papagayo.
