As part of our Doing Good series, we’re bringing you a selection of local events that celebrate Costa Rica’s natural resources and work on restoring balance to the environment. This month, we’re focusing on Coral Mania: a propagation event to boost the marine habitats of the shores of Guanacaste.
Rainforest of the sea
Often labelled as the ‘rainforest of the sea’, these precious resources cover just 1% of the ocean floor, but provide life-giving support to 25% of all marine life. Costa Rica has always been keen to protect these precious resources, but the effects of climate change, red tides, invasive seaweed and pollution have undoubtedly taken their toll on the area.
The coral restoration initiative was launched by Peninsula Papagayo back in 2019, with the aim of increasing awareness of marine degradation and restoring the lost coral beds in Bahia Culebra.
Being part of the solution
As part of this initiative, guests in the area are regularly invited to dive beneath the waves and discover the clean coral nurseries for themselves, together with Papagayo Explorers.
Papagayo Explorers is a local initiative that welcomes all those staying on Peninsula Papagayo to join the experienced team of naturalist guides and translators as they go about their daily eco-adventures. Hosting a range of Inspired Adventures and Tailored Journeys, their mission is to connect with visitors, share knowledge and discover the surrounding natural environments through experiences that are rich with purpose.
Take part in Coral Mania
If you’re staying with Papagayo Luxury at the end of November, we’d highly encourage you to save the date for the Coral Mania event. Set to take place on November 26th – 27th, this is an annual and global event that aims to harvest local coral and propagate it into nearby damaged reefs. All scuba-certified members and Peninsula Papagayo guests will be invited to join us at the reefs, just offshore from Peninsula Papagayo.
