Costa Rica is often famed for its pristine beaches and luxurious green rainforests. Filled with an extraordinary amount of biodiversity, tropical ecosystems and 27 microclimates, it’s a unique tropical retreat to be savored and enjoyed.
Peninsula Papagayo is no exception, and the region is keen to protect its natural resources moving forward. The Costa Rican community is investing an incredible amount in sustainability initiatives and infrastructures within the region, proving that luxury travel doesn’t have to cost the earth. We’ve rounded up three ways that Guanacaste is helping to create experiences that are better for you, and better for the planet too.
A smarter travel system
Here in Guanacaste, we’re surrounded with an abundance of emerald-green vegetation and unique wildlife that’s just waiting to be connected with. It’s just one of the reasons why we encourage all of our visitors to take some time away from their cars and use a bike when travelling locally.
The Papagayo Bike Share is a new system in the area, featuring a fleet of electric-assisted bikes that make each journey fun and more comfortable. Bike stations are located at the Four Seasons, Exclusive Resorts, Prieta Beach Club, the Golf Clubhouse, Nature Center, Andaz and Marina Village. What’s more, some of the private vacation villas within our portfolio also come with the use of bikes as standard in the package – check with our dedicated concierge team to find the option that works best for you and your guests.
Zero-waste economy
Over the past few years, Guanacaste has been committed to reusing and recycling as many resources as possible, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill each year. Local government has focused on implementing new composting techniques using hi-tech machinery, while businesses in the area are looking to support local communities’ businesses by providing kitchen waste to feed farm animals. What’s more, many businesses in the area are now opting to use packaging that can easily be recycled, as well as reusable options where possible. Thanks to these combined efforts, the region is now on track to send zero-waste to landfill by the end of 2022.
Focus on preservation
In line with the region’s sustainability objectives, Peninsula Papagayo is also pouring more time and energy into preserving the local landscape. This is a program that continues to be strengthened each year, with a range of environmental, maritime, archaeological, social and educational initiatives launching each season. Alongside this, local businesses are also investing in precious research to find new ways to protect the environment, strengthen local communities and provide more opportunities for visitors to truly connect with the environment through immersive experiences.
