Golf trips in Guanacaste: what to expect at Peninsula Papagayo

December 28, 2021 by Jane Moore

Ranked by Golf Digest among the “Top 100 courses outside the United States”, the Peninsula Papagayo resort is known for its Arnold Palmer-designed Papagayo Golf Course in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Now called “Ocean Course”, it is located just a few minutes away from our range of vacation villas and condos and the perfect place for sporting enthusiasts to relax and unwind during their stay. In the past the course had been open to the public, but now it’s back to being a private club, accessible solely to hotel guests or guests of members. We’re delighted to be able to offer all guests at our vacation rental properties complimentary access to the golf club and tennis centre for the duration of their stay.

Papagayo Luxury owner, Jane Moore, has been golfing on this particular course since it opened back in 2004. It’s a place that holds many special sporting memories for her, from her own journey through sports to seeing her own children learn to play on these same greens. We spoke to her to get a little more insight into what you can expect when you visit the course for yourself.

What sets this course apart for golf enthusiasts?

They have taken so much care in creating spectacular vistas. The ocean views of Bahia de Culebra and the open Pacific ocean are nothing short of breathtaking, throughout the whole course. In fact, it’s marketed as an eco-adventure playground. The dramatic elevation allows you to reach different viewpoints as you explore each hole. It’s a truly special experience, every time you go.

How can I reach the golf course?

It is an easy jaunt in your golf cart or rental car over to the Pro Shop… just a few minutes. Once there, the Pro Shop will have your golf cart ready to go!.

Do I have to bring my own equipment?

It’s completely up to you. If you have your own preferred clubs, then by all means! But if you prefer not to travel with them, the Pro Shop  offers shoe and club rentals. The Pro Shop also offers top quality golfing gear during your stay.

Are coaching packages available?

Yes! There’s a team of experts on hand to take your game to the next level, depending on your experiences so far. With so many options and packages available, it really depends on what you’re looking for. You can choose everything from a 1:1 playing lessons with a personal instructor, to family experiences and quick-fix coaching sessions. They can cover everything from pre-shot routines and mental strategies and course management – so it’s a very thorough program.

What are the best holes to check out?

One of my all time personal favorites here is hole #3, with spectacular views to both sides of the peninsula.  The hole teases you to drive the green… or you can play it safe and take the left hand side up the fairway.

I also really enjoy El Bajo, hole #6, which is a long drive down a steep hill. Very satisfying, though land the green at the bottom or you will be chipping your way back up to the green from the sloped sides.

If you want to warm up before you start, I can recommend a trip to the driving range, sand bunkers and putting greens. It’s perfect for squeezing in a little extra practice before you get started on the main game.

Is it suitable for teenagers and young people?

If you’ve got a young golfer in your party, know that your 13-17 year olds can play at a lower golf rate.  Children 12 and under play free and can play with complimentary clubs.

In any case, if you love golfing and you have a family of non-golfers, I’d recommend bringing your kids along with you for at least 9 holes. They’ll see howler monkeys, beautiful butterflies and birds as you navigate through the surrounding lush green forests. It’s truly incredible and a great way to experience nature while you’re here in the area.

Are there any tournaments to look out for?

Over recent years, the resort has partnered with  South African golfer Ernie Els as global brand ambassador. He has been the patron of a multi-year  member-guest charity golf tournament, designed to benefit the local communities in Costa Rica. It’s a great opportunity to play with a pro and make a difference at the same time!
