As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, many of us find ourselves spending more time in front of screens. Our schedules are packed to the brim, right from a very young age. That’s why many families that come and visit Guanacaste are so interested in taking time out to restore the balance and truly connect with nature. After all, this is a continuation of their scholarly education, seeing a different side to their world through rich explorations and expeditions.
So why not try one of the below programs to add a pinch of adventure, a sprinkle of green time and a big handful of play to your vacation? As artist John Cleal famously once said, “we must teach our children to smell the earth, to taste the rain, to touch the wind, to see the flowers grow, to hear the sunrise and nightfall – to care.”
Discovery Junior: 4-12 years
If you’re looking to help your children to expand their horizons, the Discovery Junior program is the perfect choice. Each itinerary also offers a balanced focus on the environmental sciences, the arts and local culture, meaning there’s something to ignite everyone’s passion and spark their interests, no matter their age. Led by an experienced team of guides, translators and seasoned naturalists, it’s a great way for kids to have fun, immerse themselves in nature and bond with soon-to-be lifelong friends along the way.
Camp Jaguar: 12-16 years
For families traveling with young teens, Camp Jaguar is the place to be. This new daily outdoor adventure program has been specifically designed for explorers aged between 12-16 years old. Led by fully-trained local experts, it’s perfect for fostering self-discovery and boosting confidence. Teens are able to meet new friends in an exciting and dynamic environment, establishing meaningful connections and exploring undiscovered, hidden gems within the protected areas of Peninsula Papagayo. Let them try their hand at everything from extreme forest adventures, ocean sports excursions, water safety courses and survival training, depending on their interests and skill levels. The program runs annually from November to April, as well as in July and August.
Papagayo Explorers: For the young at heart
Feeling left out as the kids have all the fun? Then Papagayo Explorers is for you. Seasoned guides will be more than happy to suggest a range of solo treks or fun-filled outings for the whole family to enjoy together. Some of the latest experiences to be featured on the menu include a “Cacao Volcano Expedition”, offering guests the opportunity to roam a protected crater of an inactive volcano on 4×4 vehicles. Nestled in the area, travelers can explore Costa Rica’s lowest-altitude cloud forest through a guided hike to an active research station that’s perched on the rim of the crater itself.
