Any rum fans out there? If so, you will love this new rum tour! I went a few weeks ago and was absolutely delighted by it. The primary reason for me to be in the area was to experience a wonderful boat tour on the Tempisque River. In addition, my amazing concierge had suggested trying a new rum tour onsite at the same location. Rum tour? Yes, please! Already a fan of dark rum, I was curious about what happens on a rum tour! And what a fantastic way to learn about the local culture and learn how this particular distillery makes their hand crafted rum.
The Hacienda from which everything begins is about 2 hours from Peninsula Papagayo, in a wetland area near the Tempisque River. After our incredible boat tour, followed by a tasty casado lunch onsite at the hacienda, we enjoyed our private rum tour with the rummelier. We learned about what goes in to making rum… from the sugar cane extraction and distillation, to the special barrels purchased for this particular rum. I loved every part of this interactive tour, and the guide was incredibly knowledgeable about every facet. He had us hand cranking the sugar extraction machines, and sniffing the various barrels to test our nose-worthiness when it comes to the rum aging process.
Of course my favorite part of the tour was the interactive part where you have the opportunity to individually blend and infuse your own bottle of rum. There were a variety of foods available for the infusion… foods like cloves, cinnamon, coffee, chocolate, pineapple, coconut, and cherries. My first attempt was way too “fragrant” for me, but my next attempt was divine.
They are happy to bottle your infusion as a souvenir. You name your concoction and a custom label is affixed. I will soon be enjoying “Jane’s 007 Blend”! Care to join me?
