Peninsula Papagayo is home to an extraordinary coastal landscape, with everything from rich mangroves and lush rainforests to breathtaking beaches and nestling coves. Sprawling across 1,400 acres, it’s a geo-luxury playground for a wide variety of flora and fauna that call this area their home. But what types of animals can you expect to see in the vicinity of your luxury vacation rental in Guanacaste? We spoke to Papagayo Luxury owner, Jane Moore, to find out more.
Can we see wildlife around the house?
Absolutely! The local area is teeming with wildlife, some more hidden than others, and you’re bound to spot a few precious species during your stay at our luxury villa rental. Perhaps you’ll see a vibrantly colored bird resting on a tree while you’re sipping your morning cup of coffee on the terrace, or you’ll hear them chatter back and forth. If you’re feeling curious, we suggest you take a walk on one of the many nature trails onsite at sunrise in order to maximize your opportunities of seeing some hard to spot wildlife. There’s even a dedicated Nature Center and there are plans for a Macaw Sanctuary to be run by experienced conservationists, so you can learn some more about their natural habitat, as well as how to protect them for future generations to enjoy too. We suggest going out on one of the onsite tours with one of the naturalists, Johnny, as he is amazing at spotting birds and wildlife, and has perfected a howler monkeys call!
What about monkeys?
Recently, I went out with Johnny here at Peninsula Papagayo to do a twice annual “monkey count”. They go out once during the rainy season and once during the dry season to keep loose ‘tabs’ on the monkey count at the resort. This helps them to constantly improve their conservation efforts and ensure that monkeys are always welcome within the local area. I’ve seen numerous howlers and white faced monkeys onsite since I started frequenting Peninsula Papagayo in 2004. There are even two resident spider monkeys that have been spotted more regularly since first being spotted onsite a few years ago.
Where can I go to see more wildlife while I’m here?
There are so many excursions to choose from in Guanacaste that would fit the bill here, as there’s a real variety in the biodiversity of the region. Diamante Eco Adventure Park shows the breadth in biodiversity with everything from grand jaguars to lithe jaguarundis, to three-toed sloths and, as well as striking toucans and delicate butterflies on a visit to this certified animal sanctuary. You could also take a bespoke boat trip to spot Mahi Mahi, Blue Marlin and Sailfish, or even go scuba diving to spot bright reef fish, seahorses, manta rays, turtles and octopus.
What are the best times of year for animal lovers to come and visit?
There are some super special excursions that we can offer our guests, but due to the migrational nature of local wildlife, they are only available at certain times of year. Take the Ostional Wildlife Refuge Park on the Pacific Coast for example. It’s one of the most populous nesting sites for olive ridley turtles in the world. When they’re ready to hatch in Spring, you can see hundreds of them crawling over the soft sands to make their first splashes in the deep blue ocean. We can arrange for you to be there at sunrise to watch the magic for yourself, and then enjoy a delicious, freshly made breakfast on the beach with your party before you head back up the peninsula. It’s just one of the magical experiences that we can offer you to make your days in Guanacaste all the more memorable.
