Costa Rica is celebrated worldwide for its natural beauty, friendly locals, and commitment to peace, making it one of the safest destinations in Latin America. Known for its stable political climate, environmental protections, and a well-developed tourism infrastructure, Costa Rica provides travelers a secure and inviting environment. Here’s why Costa Rica stands out as a top destination for safety and peace of mind.
Political Stability and a Culture of Peace
In 1948, Costa Rica made the bold decision to abolish its military, reallocating resources to education, healthcare, and environmental preservation. This choice has fostered a peaceful, stable society where Costa Ricans, or “Ticos,” warmly welcome visitors. This culture of non-violence and dedication to social well-being makes Costa Rica a comfortable and secure place to visit.
Common Types of Crime
While Costa Rica is generally safe, visitors should be aware of certain types of crime that can occasionally occur, as in any popular travel destination. Petty theft, such as pickpocketing and bag-snatching, is the most common crime, especially in crowded areas like markets, bus stations, and popular attractions. Car break-ins can also happen if valuables are left visibly unattended. Simple safety precautions—such as keeping personal items secure, avoiding displays of valuable items, and using hotel safes—go a long way in reducing the risk of theft.
Costa Rica’s government and local authorities work hard to maintain a safe environment, particularly in major tourist zones, where extra security measures are in place. By staying vigilant and exercising standard travel safety practices, visitors can confidently enjoy all that Costa Rica has to offer.
Advanced Tourism Infrastructure
With tourism as a central part of Costa Rica’s economy, the country has invested in robust infrastructure. Visitors benefit from well-maintained roads, airports, quality healthcare facilities, and efficient emergency services. This emphasis on guest-friendly infrastructure, combined with a focus on sustainability, makes for a safe, enjoyable travel experience.
Environmental Conservation and Safety Standards
Costa Rica’s dedication to conservation is clear, with over 25% of its land protected as national parks, wildlife reserves, and conservation areas. Guided eco-tours and outdoor adventures adhere to strict safety and environmental standards, allowing visitors to enjoy the country’s beauty in a secure and respectful manner.
Accessible, High-Quality Healthcare
Costa Rica’s healthcare system ranks among the best in Latin America, with well-equipped public and private hospitals in many tourist areas. Many clinics employ English-speaking professionals, ensuring that visitors can access quality care if needed. The country’s accessible healthcare system offers peace of mind, knowing that medical support is nearby.
Sustainable, Responsible Tourism
Costa Rica has long been a leader in sustainable tourism, with eco-certification programs that protect local communities, the environment, and guests alike. This dedication to responsible practices ensures that travelers can enjoy a secure and eco-conscious experience in harmony with Costa Rica’s values of environmental preservation and social responsibility.
Peninsula Papagayo: A Secure and Luxurious Haven in Costa Rica
Within Costa Rica’s safe and inviting landscape lies Peninsula Papagayo, a premier destination known for its exclusivity, privacy, and high level of security. This gated community is designed with thoughtful safety measures, ensuring that guests can fully relax in paradise. Here’s a closer look at the security protocols that make Peninsula Papagayo a trusted, peaceful retreat.
Exclusive Access and Rigorous Entry Control
Peninsula Papagayo operates as a private, gated community, where access is restricted to homeowners, their guests, and registered hotel visitors. All entrants must be on an approved list to pass through the main gates, ensuring a private and secure environment. Staff and vendors enter through a separate gate, where they are checked in and out by security. This dual-gate system provides complete control over who is allowed on the property, giving guests the peace of mind of staying in a secluded setting. Our concierge will register your group so that you have easy access through the front gates.
Comprehensive Patrolling by Land and Sea
To maintain high security, Peninsula Papagayo employs two guards on motorcycles who patrol the entire resort, covering the extensive terrain and ensuring that any incidents are promptly addressed. Additionally, a dedicated Peninsula Papagayo boat patrols the ocean perimeter, securing beach areas and checking incoming watercraft. This multi-layered approach to security offers guests assurance that both land and sea perimeters are well-monitored.
On-Site Medical and Emergency Services
Peninsula Papagayo goes above and beyond with its on-site medical support. A clinic with regular office hours is available for guests to receive routine medical care. For emergencies, the peninsula has a dedicated 24/7 fire department with EMTs on call and a fully equipped ambulance—one of only a few in the province of Guanacaste. This significantly reduces response time for critical situations compared to off-site facilities. Paramedics, along with their Chief, confirm that the ambulance is fully equipped and staffed by a highly trained team ready to handle complex health needs. For situations that require additional care, the nearby town of Liberia has clinics and a hospital, with the peninsula’s ambulance available to transport guests as needed.
Having active children that grew up going to Peninsula Papagayo on holidays, we have experience with several types of the local medical care. When my son felll and hit his head on the hard floor of our condo, the fire engine came with the EMT who helped calm my son down (blowing up a latex glove!) and cleaned up the bleeding. The EMT certainly could have stitched him up, but we opted to call one of our preferred doctors to come out on a housecall to stitch him up. A separate time, with a broken arm, we drove to Liberia to have him xrayed and also to set and cast his arm. We have always been impressed with the medical options onsite and nearby.
Rigorous Safety Standards for Adventure Activities
Peninsula Papagayo’s outdoor adventures meet strict safety standards, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all guests. A highlight and example is the unique ropes course, created by Victor Gallo, an internationally renowned adventure park designer. Set among a forest of Guanacaste, Ceiba, Sura, Cenízaro, and Ficus trees, this course offers a one-of-a-kind experience while prioritizing ecological preservation. “We work with professional arborists to ensure minimal impact to the ecosystem,” says Gallo. “Our goal is not to move or harm a single tree.” As a certified safety inspector with the Association for Challenge Course Technology, Gallo ensures that all equipment and protocols meet the highest safety standards.
It’s worth noting that not all guides and outfitters outside Peninsula Papagayo are equally prepared. Some may lack proper training or insurance, so we highly recommend guests work with our concierge to plan excursions. Our concierge carefully vets qualified, reputable outfitters, ensuring safety and quality experiences. If you’re not staying at one of Papagayo Luxury’s villas, please consult your concierge or conduct research to verify providers. While Peninsula Papagayo enforces high safety standards, it’s important to remember that accidents can happen, even with the best training and precautions.
Environmentally Conscious Safety Protocols
Peninsula Papagayo’s commitment to Costa Rica’s biodiversity aligns with its dedication to guest safety. Trails are well-maintained, eco-friendly lighting is used, and wildlife awareness programs protect both the environment and guests. Visitors are encouraged to stay on designated paths, ensuring a secure experience that respects the local ecosystem. Also, some safety efforts go both ways. We encourage our guests to refrain from feeding the wildlife, as animals become a nuisance when they get used to this and may need to be moved or euthanized. Please do not be part of this problem!
Golf Cart Safety and Traffic Guidelines
With its hilly terrain, golf carts are a popular way to get around the peninsula. To ensure safety, speed limits are enforced throughout the resort with a max speed of 40kph (20mph). This is to protect our visitors and vendors, as well as to protect wildlife that is likely to be present. In fact, a past guest mentioned that they had been stopped for exceeding 40kph, and he was very impressed with the officer who gave him detailed facts about the types of wildlife that are most at risk by speeders within the Peninsula Papagayo resort. These measures allow for a safe and enjoyable transportation experience within the peninsula.

With comprehensive measures in place—from controlled access and round-the-clock medical services to land and sea patrolling and sustainable protocols—this exclusive destination offers a haven where visitors can fully unwind.
