Thanksgiving is supposed to be about spending time with family. In reality, it can also mean days of grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, making beds, figuring out where everyone will sleep and trying to get an increasingly large extended family around one dining table.
There is another way to do it. At Peninsula Papagayo in Costa Rica, Thanksgiving can mean waking up to the Pacific Ocean, spending the morning at the beach or on a boat, and returning to your villa for dinner prepared by a private chef. Grandparents, parents, children and cousins can all be together, but nobody has to host.
For families who have outgrown Thanksgiving at home — or simply want to spend the holiday actually enjoying one another — a villa vacation can turn Thanksgiving into a true holiday.

Why Spend Thanksgiving at Peninsula Papagayo?
Late November is a particularly beautiful time to visit Guanacaste. The green season is coming to an end, the landscape is lush, and the transition toward Costa Rica’s dry season is beginning. It’s a wonderful time of year to trade cold weather at home for beaches, warm Pacific water and outdoor living.
Thanksgiving also falls before the peak Christmas and New Year’s Festive weeks, making it an appealing time for families who want a holiday vacation without traveling during the busiest period of the year.
What makes Peninsula Papagayo particularly well suited to Thanksgiving, though, is how easily different generations can vacation together. One person may want to play golf, another wants the beach, teenagers want something active, grandparents would rather stay beside the pool, and younger children are happiest swimming all afternoon. Nobody needs to agree on the perfect day.
Then everyone can come back together for dinner.

Thanksgiving Dinner Without Hosting Thanksgiving
For many families, this may be the best part. You can have Thanksgiving dinner at your villa without spending the day cooking it yourself. A private chef can prepare a special holiday meal for your family, with the menu discussed in advance based on your preferences.
If your family wants a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner, that can be the starting point. If you’d rather incorporate Costa Rican flavors, local ingredients or fresh seafood, the meal can take on a more tropical character. Families can also discuss dietary needs and children’s meals with their chef when planning the menu.
Instead of someone disappearing into the kitchen for half the day, everyone gets to be on vacation. The setting is pretty hard to beat, too. Thanksgiving dinner might be served at an indoor or outdoor dining table overlooking the pool and ocean, with a tropical sunset replacing the usual November weather back home.
Papagayo Luxury can assist our confirmed villa guests with private chef arrangements and grocery pre-stocking before arrival, so the refrigerator and pantry can already be stocked when you arrive.

A Thanksgiving Everyone Can Enjoy Differently
One of the realities of a large family vacation is that a four-year-old, a 17-year-old, a 25-year-old and a grandparent probably don’t want to spend every day doing the same thing. Peninsula Papagayo makes it relatively easy for everyone to find something they enjoy while still sharing the vacation.
Some family members might start Thanksgiving morning with golf on the Arnold Palmer-designed Ocean Course while others head to the beach. Another group might play tennis, pickleball or padel, take a walk, visit Papagayo Park or simply have a slow morning at the villa. By afternoon, everyone can reconvene around the pool before Thanksgiving dinner.
The rest of the week can be as active as you want it to be. A private boat day exploring the Gulf of Papagayo is one of our favorite ways to spend a day, with opportunities to swim, snorkel and visit beautiful coves and beaches. Families can also go fishing, surfing or hiking, enjoy spa treatments, or spend a day at one of the Peninsula’s beach clubs. There should also be time when nobody has anywhere they need to be. Some of the best vacation days are the ones that never really acquire a schedule.

Beach Clubs & Resort Experiences Over Thanksgiving
Staying in a private villa doesn’t mean giving up resort experiences. Depending on the residence, membership privileges and current access policies, villa guests may have opportunities to enjoy Peninsula Papagayo’s beach clubs and resort amenities.
Prieta Beach Club is a favorite for family days, with its beach, pools and dining making it easy for several generations to spend the day together. The club also has a Kids Club for children ages 4–12, where children can participate without a parent or other adult accompanying them. Younger children are welcome when accompanied by an adult. For a family spending a week together, having a dedicated place where younger guests can enjoy activities of their own — while parents have some time at the beach or pool — can be a particularly nice addition to the vacation.
Resort experiences may also be available at Four Seasons, Andaz and Nekajui, subject to current access policies and availability. If your family wants to go out for dinner during the week, Peninsula Papagayo also offers an impressive collection of restaurants ranging from casual beachfront dining to special-occasion experiences.

Why a Villa Works So Well for a Multigenerational Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is one of the holidays when the layout of a vacation home matters almost as much as the number of bedrooms. When grandparents, adult children, couples, teenagers and younger children are traveling together, everyone benefits from having both shared spaces and somewhere private to retreat.
Many families initially look for a four-bedroom villa because they have six or eight people traveling. There are relatively few four-bedroom private homes within Peninsula Papagayo, however, and a larger five-, six- or seven-bedroom home can make particularly good sense for a Thanksgiving gathering.
The extra bedrooms allow grandparents and adult couples to have comfortable private accommodations, while children and teenagers can have spaces of their own. Larger homes also tend to offer the expansive living rooms, terraces, pools and outdoor areas that make it much easier for several generations to spend a week together.
Perhaps most importantly, nobody has to be the host. There isn’t one family member whose house everyone has descended upon. Nobody needs to turn an office into a guest room, figure out where another air mattress will fit, spend the holiday loading the dishwasher or start cleaning the house after everyone leaves.
Everyone arrives on vacation.

Bringing the Whole Family? Two Villas Can Be a Great Solution
For a particularly large extended family, two nearby villas can sometimes work better than trying to find a single residence large enough for everyone. It allows grandparents, parents, cousins and children to stay near one another while giving each household considerably more space.
We’ve seen large families use two homes very naturally. Younger children might have an earlier dinner at one villa while adults dine later, or cousins may eat together at one home while other generations have dinner at the second. The arrangements can change during the week depending on what works best for the family.
Each villa remains its own private residence, however, and its maximum occupancy and visitor policies continue to apply. Renting two villas does not necessarily mean the entire combined group can gather at one house for Thanksgiving dinner or other events. We help larger families understand those requirements and plan their accommodations, meals and activities accordingly.
Used that way, two villas can offer the best of both worlds: the extended family is vacationing together, but everyone has enough room to enjoy it.
What About Thanksgiving Dinner at a Restaurant?
Not everyone wants Thanksgiving turkey, and not everyone wants to eat at the villa. That’s another advantage of spending the holiday within Peninsula Papagayo.
Restaurants at Four Seasons, Andaz, Nekajui and elsewhere on the Peninsula provide plenty of alternatives for families who prefer to go out. Holiday menus and specific Thanksgiving offerings can vary from year to year, so rather than maintaining an annual event calendar here, we help our confirmed guests navigate the dining choices available during their particular stay.
Some families choose a special restaurant for Thanksgiving itself. Others have Thanksgiving dinner at the villa and use the rest of the week to explore the Peninsula’s restaurants. There is no reason Thanksgiving in Costa Rica has to look exactly like Thanksgiving at home.

How Early Should You Book a Thanksgiving Villa at Peninsula Papagayo?
Thanksgiving is an important holiday travel week, and the number of private residences available for vacation rentals within Peninsula Papagayo is limited. Families needing larger homes, particular bedroom configurations or specific amenities should plan ahead.
Once your villa is confirmed, it’s also worth planning the things that matter most to your family. Private chefs, popular boat charters, restaurant reservations and certain activities can become limited over holiday periods, and Papagayo Luxury can assist our confirmed guests with those arrangements as part of the concierge planning process.
You don’t need to plan every minute. In fact, one of the pleasures of Thanksgiving here is having time that isn’t scheduled. Book the experiences your family will remember, then leave enough space to enjoy the reason everyone came in the first place: being together.
Spend Thanksgiving at Peninsula Papagayo
If Thanksgiving has become more complicated as your family has grown, perhaps the answer isn’t figuring out how to squeeze everyone around a bigger table. It might be moving the table somewhere completely different.
Bring the grandparents and the cousins. Let the kids spend Thanksgiving afternoon in the pool. Go out on the water. Watch the sunset. Have someone else cook dinner. Most of all, spend the week enjoying your family instead of hosting them.
If you’re considering a Thanksgiving vacation at Peninsula Papagayo, tell us who is traveling, how many bedrooms you need and what matters most to your family. We can help you find the right villa and, once your stay is confirmed, assist with the details — including airport transfers, golf carts, private chefs, grocery pre-stocking, boat charters, restaurant reservations and activities.
